There are some truths that people often don't really want to hear, such as this one: despite the growing economic importance of technological innovations, women are still severely underrepresented in STEM fields of study and professions (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) worldwide. This is particularly true in Japan—one of the most industrialized countries in the world—and also in Austria, where structural progress and traditional role models often work against each other. But why is this the case? And what can be done to promote talent, break down stereotypes, and enable careers?
Some may ask: Why is this a problem? Technological developments now permeate all areas of life, and without the perspectives and talents of women—half the world's population—important innovation potential is lost. Studies clearly show that diverse teams are more successful, creative, and sustainable. This means that if women are absent from research, technology, and development, their perspectives are also missing—in algorithms, in products, in solutions to societal challenges. And we simply cannot afford that—as a society and as an economy.
